
Hamburg woman wins short film award

The debut film "Bambirak" by Hamburg-based Director of Photography, Director and Script Writer Zamarin Wahdat has been honoured with the award for best international short film at the renowned Sundance Film Festival in the USA.

In her short filmBambirac 31-year-old Zamarin Wahdat from Hamburg tells the story of a girl of Afghan origin who experiences everyday racism. The film is Wahdat's directorial debut; she previously took on the second camera in the documentary short film "Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (if you're a girl)". The film was awarded an Oscar in 2020.
Zamarin Wahdat also wrote the script for "Bambirak", Executive Producer is Joy Jorgensen (Killjoy Films), Distribution is handled by interfilm. Wahdat's short film screened at the Max Ophüls Prize in Saarbrücken earlier this year and has now been honoured by the short film jury at the Sundance Film Festival as best international feature film.
Most of the filming for "Bambirak" took place at Hamburg's harbour and in the districts of Fuhlsbüttel and Steilshoop. The newcomer project was supported by the non-commercial technical distribution programme of Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein.
Wahdat's next project is a "Tatort" film shoot with Director Mia Spengler. Wahdat will also be shooting the FFHSH-funded Documentary "I am Sarah" about the refugee Syrian ex-professional swimmer Sarah Mardini.
