The Ohlsdorf Cemetery covers 400 hectares well-known throughout the world for its beautiful parkland and abundant plants. It is located in the north of Hamburg. Opened at the beginning of the 19th century, it is one of the world´s largest cemeteries. The area includes 17 kilometres of roads, 13 chapels of different religions, ponds and a crematory. Gustav Gründgens, Hans Albers, Carl Hagenbeck and many other celebrities are buried here. Fantastic old gravestones can be found in some areas of the cemeteries. The chapels and buildings are all different in style. The main offices were built between 1900 and 1914.
Mausoleum Kretschmer

The mausoleum Kretschmer is the largest civil grave monument in northern Europe. It was built in 1905 by the son of the wealthy businessman Johann Heinrich Freiherr von Schröder in the neo-romantic style. The octagonal central building of red sandstone has an opulent diameter of 17.6 meters and holds overall 24 crypt cells. The building is situated on a small hill not far from the marble sculpture "The Fate" by Hugo Lederer. The reinforced concrete dome is supported by six columns and two pillars, the floor is decorated with a large, star-shaped pattern. The mausoleum is also equipped with a large number of interesting stained glass and elaborate ornamentation. In the entrance area, there is a crucifixion scene and in the opposite the birth of Jesus. Many images are now badly damaged, some are even missing.
