Carl Hagenbeck´s idea of a nature-orientated zoo was ground breaking at the beginning of the 20th century. The zoo was built between 1902 and 1907, and although it has been remodelled carefully over the past years, it has kept its original concept.

Apostelkirche Eimsbüttel

Behind a brick, neo-Gothic church facade one will discover a sanctuary and a parish hall on two levels. This amazing construction is the ingenious result of a fire in 1977. Instead of demolishing or reconstructing the church, it was decided to re-design it. A false ceiling was inserted into the remaining outer walls. Both levels can be admired from the outside through an enormous portal and the glass courtyard. Three windows in the sanctuary depict, in the form of photographic prints, the faces of 12 women and men whose lives had been exemplary in the christian and humanitarian sense.

Eimsbüttel is the right district for people who need a bit of everything. Although it is one of Hamburg's high-density areas, green streets and old buildings give Eimsbüttel its charme. Many young people and families live here; the numerous schools, the proximity to uni and to the Schanzenviertel surely contribute to this. To both sides of the Ostertraße (main shopping street) there are many quiet backstreets, and the Isebekkanal alongside the Bismarckstraße invites you for a walk. Osterstraße, Eppendorfer Weg and Hoheluftchaussee are within walking distance and offer a broad variety of shopping possibilities: Large department stores, smaller shops and weekly markets. Eimsbüttel also has a lot to offer gastronomically: Cafes, restaurants and bars invite you to take a break. But be warned: Even on weekdays it is difficult or sometimes impossible to find a car park.
Edelfettwerk

The Edelfettwerk is an old factory in Hamburg, in which fats were made till the 30's. The production was shut down and thus there were the possibility of creating a special event location. Old factories have been uninstalled and replaced by an unique lounge, dance- and open spaces which, depending on the season offer, have space for events in the order of 50 up to 2000 people. The main hall of the Edelfettwerk is located in the former warehouse of the building. The original character still works through the high walls of the old building. As a church, the hall consists of a towering nave and two aisles.
