3 questions for...The child with the golden jacket
06.11.2018 | Hamburg premiere "Where no shadow falls"

Hamburg production company "Das Kind mit der goldenen Jacke" is bringing its first 90-minute film to the big screen with "Wo kein Schatten fällt". The mystery film celebrates its Hamburg premiere at the Abaton on 6 November and can be seen on NDR television on 8 November. We met up with the film collective for a brief interview.
- What particularly appealed to you about the horror genre? What possibilities are there here that other genres don't offer?
Making a genre film is great, you can let off steam and the scope for creativity is much greater. It allows us as filmmakers to tell the story in a much more pointed and explicit way than we are used to. On the one hand, that's a lot of fun to make. On the other hand, it also helps us to name the topic much more clearly and radically - in our case, for example, female oppression.

- The film was made as part of the young talent initiative "Nordlichter" by NDR, Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig Holstein and nordmedia. The press release states that you want to "realise the highest possible quality with a debut budget". What exactly do you mean by that?
A genre film from Germany is rather unusual. That was appealing, but of course also presented us with the task of fulfilling the higher demands on the production with a debut budget. It was clear and important to us from the outset that we wanted to visibly invest every cent entrusted to us by FFHSH, nordmedia and NDR. In other words, in the things that you really see and feel in the film in the end. On our current festival and cinema tour through Germany, we are receiving a lot of praise for the dense atmosphere of the film. So it seems to have been a success.

- Which scary films did you take as a model for "Where No Shadow Falls"?
Of course, there are various influences: Script Writer Lena Krumkamp and Directors Esther Bialas had more than just explicit genre films to draw on. We were particularly interested in films about young women coming of age and emancipating themselves against a male-dominated society. The films of Céline Sciamma or Sofia Coppola, for example, are something of an inspiration. But of course we also quoted mystery classics such as The Silence of the Lambs or the series Top of the Lake in our film and they are also role models.
