Exciting film fare for the start of spring: the Director's Cut Committee of Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein supported a total of 22 projects with more than 1.6 million euros at its latest meeting. The funded projects include an episodic film about a bomb disposal operation in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel neighbourhood and Charly Hübner's feature film debut based on a novel by Tomte frontman Thees Uhlmann.
Bomb found in Hamburg's Schanze: Directors and Script Writer Kerstin Polte is honoured for her episodic filmDud (450,000 euros, Tamtam Film, Hamburg) spent around four weeks filming in the Hanseatic city. Anne Ratte-Polle, Corinna Harfouch and Karl Markovics are among the ensemble of residents of the Schanzen who are confronted with their own explosive life situations during the evacuation. Kerstin Polte wrote the script together with Lion H. Lau.
InThe Teachers' Lounge (390,000 euros, if...Productions Film, Munich), Directors and Hamburg Media School graduate İlker Çatak takes viewers into a school where people keep stealing. A total of 33 days of filming are planned for summer 2021 in Hamburg. Executive Producer Ingo Fliess and İlker Çatak last worked together on "I Was, I Am, I Will Be", which won the Bronze Award for Best Film at the 2020 German Film Awards. The script was written by Johannes Duncker and İlker Çatak.
A different kind of road trip awaits us with the Finnish-German co-productionGrump - In search of the escort (150,000 euros, Aspect Telefilm, Hamburg) by Directors Mika Kaurismäki, who was last seen on the big screen with his film "Master Cheng in Pohjanjoki". In his new tragicomedy, he follows the 72-year-old notoriously bad-tempered Finn Grump on his search for a 72 Ford Escort to Germany. The script, based on a Finnish novel, was written by Daniela Hakulinen and Tuomas Kyrö. 11 days of filming are planned in the region for May 2021.
Another film adaptation of a novel comes from Charly Hübner, who has been working withSophia, death and me (100,000 euros, DCM Pictures, Berlin) makes his feature film debut as a Director. The film is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Tomte singer Thees Uhlmann. What is it about? Just as Reiner is haunted by death, his ex Sophia turns up at his door in a rage. Death lets him go. Will Reiner now get a second chance? An adventurous road movie begins. The script was written by Script Writer Lena May Graf. Directors Leiv Igor Devold also receives production funding for the queer love storyNorwegian Dream (85,000 euros, Riva Filmproduktion, Hamburg), which is set in the milieu of Polish guest workers on a Norwegian island. The Documentary is about a huge steel factory that emits toxic fumes day and nightThe Sky above Zenica (40,000 euros. Junafilm, Hamburg) by Nanna Frank Møller and Zlatko Pranjic. Leslie Franke and Herdolor Lorenz deal with the property boom in the world's metropolises inSold City (20,000 euros, Kern Filmproduktion, Hamburg).
Fundings are available three times in the project development area: The romantic comedyKabul Jan (30,000 euros, Adomeit Film, Lübeck) by Director of Photography, Script Writer and Cannes Award winner Shahrbanoo Sadat is a declaration of love to the Afghan capital and is about a young camerawoman who falls head over heels in love with a married TV reporter. Several days of filming are planned in the region. A further 30,000 euros will go toThe optimism (fünferfilm, Hamburg) by HFBK graduate Steffen Goldkamp, who makes his feature film debut with this crime drama about a young ex-con. Directors Benjamin Teske presents with Shadow (18,000 euros, Wüste Film, Hamburg) is an unusual vampire story set in a hospital ward.
Seven scripts will be supported with a total of 155,000 euros: The tragicomedyFat life (25,000 euros, Riva Filmproduktion, Hamburg) by Oliver Kracht is about a female bus driver who blackmails politicians and industrialists with explosive video footage. There is also 25,000 euros for the portrait of a flat-sharing generationSugar storage (Silva Film, Lübeck) by Hannah Martin and Melanie Waelde, the film adaptation of the novelPower (bombero international, Hamburg) by Uisenma Borchu and the dramaNarges (Cosmopol Film, Hamburg) by Alexander Bechdel. With 20,000 euros each, the scriptsI was home when I got there (PakFilm, Hamburg) by Mahnaz Mohammadi andCustody by Zeynep Yürekli from Hamburg. 15,000 euros will also go to the coming of age dramaCat Black - The Cat Black by the Hamburg Script Writer Evrim Kaya.
Fundings in the area of completion are available for the Berlinale filmDistrict Terminal (35,000 euros PakFilm, Hamburg) by Bardia Yadegari and Ehsan Mirhosseini andVengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash (35,000 euros, bombero international, Hamburg) by Indonesian filmmaker Edwin Edwin. In addition, three films are being funded with a total of 90,000 euros in Distribution.
