North German productions at Filmfest Hamburg 2021

A genuine northern German production: Sabrina Sarabi's drama "No One's with the Calves" was shot in Schleswig-Holstein over 16 days and was produced by Hamburg-based Weydemann Bros, which has already won numerous awards with "Systemsprenger" in 2020. Based on the novel of the same name by Alina Herbing, the film tells the story of 24-year-old Christian who lives on the farm of her long-time boyfriend Jan in the East German province. However, the spirit of optimism of the post-reunification years is long gone and Christin just wants to get away.

Directors and HFBK graduate Wendla Nölle from Hamburg is screening her fictional feature film debut "Ein großes Versprechen" at this year's Filmfest Hamburg. The film centres on a couple in the last third of their lives who struggle with the question of how much freedom they should allow each other. The film was produced by the Hamburg-based company Tamtam Film and was made as part of the "Nordlichter" programme for young filmmakers by NDR, MOIN Film Fund and nordmedia.

Directors Rick Ostermann sends lead actor Tobias Moretti to the year 2029 in this future thriller, in which artificial intelligence has taken control of large parts of our lives. The film was produced by Wüste Film from Hamburg - Lisa Viscari ("Dark") and Max von der Groeben (Fack ju Goethe, Lindenberg! Do your thing) also take on roles.

A biting piece of fun: the anti-fascist vampire comedy "Bloodsuckers" by Director Julian Radlmaier premiered at the 2021 Berlinale and was largely shot in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district of Schleswig-Holstein. The film is set during the Stalin era in 1928 and is about Soviet worker Lyovushka, who wants to try his luck in Hollywood - but gets stuck in a seaside resort in Germany where vampires are up to mischief.

The directorial debut "District Terminal" by Bardia Yadegari and Ehsan Mirhosseini was produced by the newly founded Hamburg production company PakFilm. Executive Producer Farzad Pak was previously involved in the Berlinale-winning film "There is no evil". At the centre of the film "District Terminal" is Peyman, a poet who lives with his mother in a high-rise housing estate in Tehran. Caught up in his drug addiction, poverty and a forbidden love affair, he tries to survive his delusions and increasing loneliness despite censorship.

In their documentary film "Für nichts un wieder nichts", the two Hamburg filmmakers Gisela Tuchtenhagen and Margot Neubert-Maric portray three ex-prisoners of the GDR justice system who simply cannot forget their experiences in prison.

The Story of my Wife, a drama by Hungarian Berlinale winner Ildiko Enyedi ("Body and Soul"), celebrated its world premiere in Cannes this year. The European co-production with leading actress Léa Seydoux was filmed in 2019 at historical locations in Hamburg, among others. What is the film about? Captain Jacob (played by Gijs Naber) wants to marry the first woman who enters the room on a coffee house bet. The woman in question is Lizzy (played by Léa Seydoux).

What a start: Finnish filmmaker Khadar Ahmed has made it straight to Cannes with his feature film debut "The Gravedigger's Wife" - the film will celebrate its world premiere at the International Critics' Week in July 2021. The drama was edited in Hamburg by Sébastien Thümler, and colour grading took place at The Post Republic in Hamburg. The film is set in Djibouti and focuses on gravedigger Guled, who urgently needs money for his sick wife's operation.

Directors Ameer Fakher Eldin's debut drama "The Stranger" celebrated its premiere at this year's Venice Filmfest Hamburg and will be shown as a German premiere in Hamburg. The film is set in the Golan Heights on the Syrian border. Adnan, a doctor without a licence to practise, finds himself in a serious crisis: he drinks too much and has fallen out with his family. His life takes another unfortunate turn when he meets a wounded man from the Syrian war. The Stranger" was co-produced by the Hamburg-based company Red Balloon Film.

Bulgarian Director Pavel G. Vesnakov's feature film debut has already won the Special Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Award at the Sofia International Film Festival. In "German Lessons", Vesnakov follows his anti-hero Nicola on his last day in Sofia before he leaves for Germany to escape his shattered life. But before he sets off on his journey, he wants to visit a few people in his home town who are important to him. German Lessons" was co-produced by the Hamburg-based company Heimathafen Film, and parts of the post production also took place in Hamburg.

Probably the most spectacular title of Filmfest Hamburg: the action comedy "Vengeance is Mine, All Others Pay Cash" by Indonesian Director Edwin was named Best Film at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival and is now continuing its triumphal march. Based on a novel, the film is about the fearless fighter Kawir, whose raging urge to fight is based on a secret: his impotence. When he meets the strong female fighter Iteung, Ajo is not only defeated - he suddenly falls in love with her. The German co-producer of the film is Fatih Akin's company bombero international. Part of the post production took place in Hamburg.
