Three films at the Festival de Cannes
10.04.2025 | With Fatih Akin's "Amrum" to the Croisette
Three MOIN-funded productions will celebrate their world premieres at the 78th Festival de Cannes in May: As announced today, Fatih Akin's new feature film "Amrum" will be shown in the prestigious "Cannes Première" section. Romeria" by Carla Simón will screen in the official competition and "Once Upon a Time in Gaza" by Tarzan and Arab Nasser in the Un Certain Regard section.
With Amrum, Hamburg-based director Fatih Akin brings a piece of Schleswig-Holstein to the Côte d'Azur. The story of "Amrum" is based on the childhood memories of Hark Bohm, one of the most influential Directors and Script Writers of German cinema. He developed the script together with Fatih Akin, with whom he has a long-standing creative collaboration - as he did previously for "Into the Fate". MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein supported the film, which had around 25 shooting days in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, with 800,000 euros.
Carla Simón is regarded as one of the most important new voices in European cinema. With Romeria, produced by Ventall Cinema, the Director can now hope to win the coveted Palme d'Or. Simón's previous film "Alcarràs" already won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 2022. The MOIN Film Fund supported "Romeria" with 70,000 euros and parts of the post production took place in Hamburg.
The Hamburg production companies Riva Filmproduktion and Red Balloon are behind the drama Once Upon a Time in Gaza by Arab and Tarzan Nasser. The film, which will be shown in the "Un Certain Regard" section, follows on from the Nasser brothers' festival success "Gaza mon Amour". The MOIN Film Fund supported the production with 250,000 euros. Post production also took place in Hamburg.
Three times MOIN in Cannes - that's a real exclamation mark for the film north!
Albers continues: "Amrum is a very special project: it combines Hark Bohm's personal story with Fatih Akin's signature style and brings a piece of Schleswig-Holstein to the Croisette. We are proud to be part of this strong Cannes year together with the teams of Romeria and Once Upon a Time in Gaza and congratulate everyone involved from the bottom of our hearts!"
Nomination for Notruf Hafenkante
Hamburg is also represented in Cannes in the Green Production category: The long-running ZDF series Notruf Hafenkante, produced by Letterbox Filmproduktion, has been nominated for a Global Production Award as one of the most sustainable TV productions worldwide. In addition to the Hamburg series, four other productions are in the final, including the international hit series "Bridgerton" (Netflix).
Albers continues: "The nomination recognises our long-standing commitment to environmentally friendly filming - from the early introduction of our Green Shooting Card to today's use of emission-free battery power. We are keeping our fingers crossed for Letterbox Filmproduktion!"
More about "Amrum":
At the centre of the film is 12-year-old Nanning (played by Jasper Billerbeck), who does everything he can to help his mother feed the family during the last days of the war on Amrum in the spring of 1945. With the longed-for peace, however, come completely new conflicts, and Nanning must learn to find his own way. The other roles include Laura Tonke as Nanning's mother, Thalia actress Lisa Hagmeister, Detlev Buck, Matthias Schweighöfer, Lars Jessen and Hark Bohm. Diane Kruger can also be seen in "Amrum" - she already won the award for Best Actress in Cannes in 2017 for her role in Akin's film "Into the Fate".
"Amrum" was produced by bombero international and Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, in co-production with Rialto Film. AMRUM will be released in German cinemas on 9 October 2025 in distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures.
