Director Mohammad Rasoulof managed to escape from Iran shortly before the world premiere of "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" in Cannes. He now lives with his family in Hamburg. The drama celebrated its German premiere here at the film festival. It tells the story of how an entire family becomes victims of the regime - one in rebellion, the other in loyalty to the state. The drama, parts of which were filmed in Hamburg, will be in the Oscar race for Germany next year.

Film adaptation of the novel "Der Buchspazierer" at Filmfest Hamburg

As soon as the novel "Der Buchspazierer" was published, Hamburg-based Executive Producer Daniel Hartmann discovered the cinematic potential in the material and the tragic moments in the comedy. Directors Ngo The Chau's film adaptation, which was partly shot in Hamburg and stars the enchanting duo Christoph Maria Herbst and Yuna Bennett, will celebrate its premiere at Filmfest Hamburg (3 October).

Black Fruit @ Filmfest Hamburg

There's a lot of Hamburg in here: In June 2024, the series "Black Fruit" celebrated its world premiere at the renowned Tribeca Film Festival in New York. On 3 October, six of the eight episodes can be seen as a German premiere at Filmfest Hamburg with a four-hour mega event including Q&A. The series was filmed entirely in the Hanseatic city. Creator, showrunner, head writer and lead actor Lamin Leroy Gibba also grew up in Hamburg - and takes a look at the realities of life for black and queer people in "Black Fruit".

Nora Fingscheidt's "The Outrun" @Berlinale

Five years ago, North German Director Nora Fingscheidt started her triumphal march at the Berlinale with her drama "Systemsprenger". Now the 41-year-old is back at the International Film Festival with a MOIN-funded film: "The Outrun", based on the memoirs of Amy Liptrot. The leading role is played by Saoirse Ronan. "Below Deck"

With "Below Deck", the two Hamburg filmmakers Martin Prinoth and Martina Mahlknecht take a look into the world of luxury cruise ships - below deck, to be precise. In an immersive 360-degree experience, viewers follow a five-person crew of low-wage Filipino workers as they recount stories from everyday life on board. The project will celebrate its world premiere at the end of August at the 81st Venice Biennale in the Venice Immersive section.

European Writers Club in Hamburg

At the beginning of April, the Euopean Writers Club held its first "Boosting Impact Camp" in Hamburg. Six teams spent a week working on their series ideas on the Reeperbahn. In collaboration with the European initiative Le Groupe Ouest and supported by the EU and 25 financial contributors from all over Europe, broadcasters, sales executives and emerging writers were also included in the camp itself. We visited them for a day.

German premiere of "Sultana's Dream"

Welcome to Ladyland: "Sultana's Dream", an animated film that takes up and repackages an Indian feminist science fiction story from 1905, is screening at this year's Filmfest Hamburg. The film by Isabel Herguera combines different animation styles and is aimed at an adult audience. "Sultana's Dream" was co-produced by the animation studio Fabian&Fred from Hamburg.

"Forever" at the Filmfest Hamburg

In "Forever - The Story of a Love", Hamburg filmmaker and Grimme Award winner Pia Lenz accompanied a married couple from Harburg with her camera for five years during the last stage of their lives. A film about the highs and lows of a life together - until one of them has to go first at the end. Just released at Filmfest Hamburg and in cinemas from 9 November.

HH premiere of "Totem and me"

A protector that we all need: "Totem and I" is about 11-year-old Ama, whose family in the Netherlands is to be deported from one day to the next. Ama flees from the police - and from then on has a giant porcupine at her side to protect her. Directors and Script Writer Sander Berger's film was co-produced by Leitwolf Filmproduktion from Hamburg and is celebrating its Hamburg premiere at the MICHEL Filmfest Hamburg.

"Heaven can wait" at the Filmfest Hamburg

Hamburg filmmaker Sven Halfar has already made several documentaries about musicians and bands. With "Heaven can wait", however, he doesn't just tell the story of an extraordinary choir. He takes an unusual look at a generation that knows how to enjoy every day of life. The film celebrated its Hamburg premiere at Filmfest Hamburg and will be released in German cinemas on 12 October.
