
Second FFHSH film in the Oscar race

The South African drama "The Wound" is the second FFHSH-funded production to be nominated for an Oscar in the "Best Non-English Language Film" category. Executive Producer of "The Wound" is the Hamburg-based company Riva Film. The second Oscar candidate is Fatih Akin with his Hamburg thriller "Into the Fate", as German Films announced a few weeks ago.

About the film: The drama "The Wound" by up-and-coming South African director John Trengove is about the ritual circumcision process that turns a boy into a man. The wealthy Kwanda is sent with a group to a village to undergo this tribal tradition. However, he discovers an intimate and forbidden relationship that puts his life in danger. "The Wound" is an international collaboration between Uruca Media (Cape Town), Riva Filmproduktion (Hamburg) and other production companies. South Africa's National Film and Video Foundation has nominated the film for an Oscar in the category "Best Non-English Language Film". The film opened the Panorama main programme of the 67th Berlinale on 9 February 2017 and has been showing in German cinemas since 14 September.
About the Academy Awards: The 90th Academy Awards will take place in Hollywood on 4 March 2018. The Academy in Hollywood will decide on the nominations in the "Best Non-English Language Film" category. The nominations are to be announced on 23 January 2018.
