Sailors' revolt in Schleswig-Holstein
20.10.2017 | Set visit November Storm
Mutinous sailors, mass protests, the dismissal of the Emperor and the birth of the Republic: the docu-drama Novembersturm by Director and Script Writer Jens Becker tells the dramatic story of the sailors' uprising in 1918 with great attention to detail.
The film focuses on the labour leader Karl Artel, a mechanical engineer at the torpedo boat shipyard in Kiel, his fiancée Helene Hartung, the SPD Reichstag deputy Gustav Noske and the admiral and governor of Kiel, Wilhelm von Souchon. Their fates show how many small or even coincidental decisions and situations influence history.
Lucas Prisor, Helene Confurius, Alexander Finkenwirth, Rainer Reiners, Ernst Stötzner and Gustav Peter Wöhler are just some of the high-calibre actors taking part in Novembersturm. Executive Producer is Michael Eckelt fromRiva Film- NDR and ARTE are also on board.
Filming started on 12 October in Flensburg-Mürwik. Further days of filming will take place in Flensburg, Kiel, Hamburg and Geesthacht. Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein was present for one day during filming in Schleswig-Holstein. The film was shot in an old shipowner's villa in Wentorf. The dark interior with its heavy and impressive library (including a musty odour) supported the ambience of the filmed scene, which shows a momentous conversation between Admiral and Governor Wilhelm Souchon and SPD Member of Parliament Gustav Noske. Souchon's wife and his aide were also at the table. NDR editor Ulrike Dotzer explained that this inclusion brings a female perspective to the film, which is often neglected by the almost exclusively male historians.
Filming took place over twelve days in many northern German locations such as the Mürwik naval school in Flensburg, the museum railway station in Schönberg, the Howaldt iron foundry in Kiel and the steamship "Stettin" in the Övelgönne museum harbour.
It is expected to be broadcast on NDR and ARTE in autumn 2018.
