30.08.2018 | TIFF 2018
Margarethe von Trotta's documentary "In Search of Ingmar Bergman" and the drama "Sibel" are two FFHSH-funded films on the list for the 43rd Toronto International Film Festival. Von Trotta's Ingmar Bergman homage has already celebrated its premiere in Cannes, while the international co-production "Sibel" was recently honoured with three awards at the Locarno Festival.
Sibel The village of Kusköy, in the mountains on the Black Sea, Turkey. SIBEL, 25 years old, mute since childhood, is able to communicate by whistling. She is not married and lives with her father. The villagers regard her as disabled. She fights her loneliness by exhausting herself working in the fields. One day she meets a deserter from the Turkish army who is hiding in the forest. He sees her with different eyes and this opens up a new perspective for Sibel for the first time: what if she too were a woman? Turkish actress Damla Sönmez played the role of Sibel, while Çağla Zencirci and Guillaume Giovanetti were the Directors. The Hamburg-based company Riva Filmproduktion was involved in the international production as German co-producer. Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein supported the film with 175,000 euros. The drama recently took home the Fipresci Award, the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the 2nd Prize of the Junior Jury at the Locarno Film Festival. In Toronto, the film will be shown in the "Contemporary World Cinema" section.
In search of Ingmar Bergman Ingmar Bergman and Margarethe von Trotta meet in person in Munich in 1977. Both were at a key moment in their lives: Bergman was at a turning point after his tax evasion from Sweden, von Trotta at the beginning of her career as a young filmmaker. Now, 40 years later and after 24 of her own films, she is dedicating herself to Bergman in a cinematic search for traces. There is still great respect for approaching her master. Nevertheless, in In Search of Ingmar Bergman (C-Films, Hamburg), the filmmaker embarks on a very personal journey through Bergman's universe, his films and his life. The film celebrated its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and is screening in Toronto in the "TIFF Docs" section.
