
Around the world in 31 projects

In its second funding session in 2020, the FFHSH's Director's Cut Committee has funded 31 projects with almost 1.2 million euros. The funded films include an Indian road movie by Hamburg production company Tamtam Film and a culinary journey of discovery to Albania by Schleswig-Holstein filmmaker Andrea Jeska.
When the Nama Filmcollective visits India last year during the elections, it is confronted with a country where right-wing nationalist populism has become rampant. With the Documentary and RoadmovieI dreamt of a nation (120,000 euros, Tamtam Film, Hamburg), the Nama Filmcollective is looking for an answer to the country's identity crisis.
A title like a hammer blow: InWhen fucking spring is in the air (100,000 euros, Heimathafen Film & Media, Hamburg), Directors and Script Writer Danyael Sugawara tells the story of 16-year-old pregnant Kasia's intense journey. After the death of her grandmother, the girl sets off to look for her parents, who work in Germany and whom she has not seen for almost a decade - in the process, she uncovers a family secret. Sugawara wrote the script together with co-writer Heleen Suer. Twelve days of filming are planned in the production region.
WithThe Long Night (90,000 euros, One Two Films, Berlin) is a dark German-Danish co-production by Director and Script Writer Ali Abbasi, co-written by Mani Parsa. Abbasi's film "Border" won the main prize in the "Un Certain Regard" section in Cannes in 2018. Part of the post production will take place in Hamburg. The Documentary will receive 85,000 euros in production fundingFollow Me (Flare Film, Berlin) by Joya Thome. The film tells the story of two girls on different continents who, connected by their screens, search for self-realisation, recognition and inspiration. The script was written in collaboration with Lydia Richter and Phillip Wunderlich. There is also 85,000 euros for the DocumentaryWe, the wolves (Tiempo Filmproduktion, Hamburg) by Hamburg filmmaker Dario Aguirre, which is about belonging, origin and family. Directors and Script Writer Andrea Jeska undertakes a culinary journey of discovery to Albania inBread, salt and open hearts (65,000 euros, Wulfmedien, Kiel). InThe fabulous world of Dr Cadeot (60,000 euros, Tag/Traum Filmproduktion, Cologne), Hamburg-based Ulrike Pfeiffer embarks on a journey into the decelerated world of the wild and beautiful Gascony in her documentary of the same name. The DocumentaryWhere is my mind (60,000 euros, dirk manthey film, Hamburg) by up-and-coming filmmaker Can Mansuroglu (co-writer Imke Hansen) is about a musician with psychosis whose friends try to help him. The story behind a photo from the Second World War is the subject ofThe corner - of the lies of truth (20,000 euros, Sinn Filmproduktion, Dohna) by Hamburg-based Director and Script Writer Christa Pfafferott. The Documentary deals with the topics of flight and self-explorationLove fear (15,000 euros Freischwimmer Film, Bremen) by Sandra Prechtel. In total, ten projects will receive production funding totalling 700,000 euros, of which 465,000 euros will go to seven projects directed by women.
In project development, a total of seven projects will receive a cash injection: Child abuse is the subject ofLittle Red Riding Hood must die (35,000 euros, a little. Film production, Berlin) by Hamburg-based Directors Charlotte Rolfes and Script Writer Maike Rasch. Arne Körner from Hamburg delves into the biography of Dietrick Kuhlbrodt in the DocumentaryNonconforming (26,000 euros, Kinescope Film, Hamburg). In the dramaChopper (24,000 euros, La Mosca Bianca Films, Hamburg), Hamburg-based Romeo Grünfelder tells the story of a dentist's surgery that seems to be haunted by ominous spirits. 20,000 each will go to the long-term documentaryAll inclusive (Kloos & Co Nord, Hamburg) by Hamburg-based Directors/Writers Tobias Lickes and Thorsten Ernst (other authors are Gordon Volk and Malte Nieschalk) and the tragicomedySandworms (Salt & Waves) (Leitwolf Filmproduktion, Hamburg) by Julia Ritschel from Hamburg and HMS graduate Cherokee Agnew. Fundings totalling 18,000 euros will be awarded to the documentaryHeaven can wait (Heimathafen Film & Media, Hamburg) by Sven Halfar from Hamburg. 17,000 euros for the essayistic DocumentaryReproduction (fünferfilm, Hamburg) by Hamburg filmmaker Katharina Pethke.
The FFHSH will also fund six scripts: The romantic film set in a Syrian prison2 minutes (25,000 euros, Bon Voyage, Hamburg) by Script Writers Maike Rasch and Sulaiman Tadmory from Hamburg, the family filmIsänmaa - Father(s) Land (25,000 euros) by Hamburg-based Script Writer Miko Zeuschner, the episodic filmGirlsplaining (20,000 euros, Skalar Film, Hamburg) by HFBK graduate Eike Weinreich and co-author Zora Rux, the episodic filmKiosk (18,500 euros) by Suzan Sekerci from Hamburg, the tragicomedy The last wedding (15,000 euros) by Nazmi Kirik from Hamburg and the Coming of Age series I am young and need the money (15,000 euros, Wüste Film, Hamburg) by Hamburg-based Script Writer Emanuel Tessema.
Last but not least, there was exploitation funding for eight projects, including the Berlinale winnerThere is no Evil (60,000 euros, Grandfilm, Nuremberg) by Mohammad Rasoulof,Winter journey (25,000 euros, RFF - Real Fiction Filmverleih, Cologne) by Anders Oestergaard with Bruno Ganz in his last role and the arthouse horror filmSleep (12,000 euros, Salzgeber & Co. Medien GmbH, Berlin) by Michael Venus, which is now being released in German cinemas on Halloween weekend after its Berlinale premiere.
