Two Hamburg films in the Cannes competition
03.06.2021 | "The Story of my Wife" + "France"
With "The Story of my Wife", Hungarian Berlinale winner Ildikó Enyedi (Golden Bear for "Body and Soul") is in competition at the 74th Cannes International Film Festival. The European co-production with leading actress Léa Seydoux was shot in 2019 at historical locations in Hamburg, among others. Also included: Bruno Dumont's "France", which was co-produced by Red Balloon Film from Hamburg - and also stars Léa Seydoux.
Helge AlbersCEO of Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein: "Hamburg in the 1920s has rarely looked better than in 'The Story of my Wife'. With Ildikó Enyedi, a great Director has taken on the novel by Hungarian Script Writer Milán Füst. We are very much looking forward to seeing places like Hamburg's Speicherstadt on the big screen in Cannes in July and are keeping our fingers crossed for the Berlin production company Komplizen Film and the entire crew. Further congratulations go to Hamburg-based Executive Producer Dorothe Beinemeier from Red Balloon Film, who is also in the competition with 'France'."
More about "The Story of my Wife" Based on the 1942 book by Hungarian Script Writer Milán Füst, "The Story of my Wife" tells the story of Captain Jacob (played by Gijs Naber), who marries the first woman to enter the room on a coffee house bet. The woman in question is Lizzy (played by Léa Seydoux). The film is set in Hamburg and Paris in the 1920s. In April 2019, the team led by Hungarian Director and Script Writer Ildikó Enyedi spent ten days filming in Hamburg - including in the Speicherstadt warehouse district and the harbour. The love story about Captain Jacob Störr is a European co-production between Hungary, Germany, Italy and France; the German Executive Producer is Komplizen Film (including Toni Erdmann) from Berlin. The film was supported by Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein with 450,000 euros in production funding.
