Hamburg Media School is the first German university to use OMNI Inclusion Data
12.05.2025 | Survey tool for more diversity
The Hamburg Media School (HMS) is sending a clear signal for diversity and inclusion in the German film industry with its current film degree programme. Since the current student year, HMS has been the first university in Germany to use the OMNI Inclusion Data survey tool to record the diversity on its students' film sets and back it up with concrete data.
"It is important to us that our students come into contact with this new initiative from MOIN Film Fund right at the beginning of their careers," says Andrea Schütte, Head of Production at Hamburg Media School. "The students are actively involved in the process right from the start and have the opportunity to reflect on how diverse the cast and crew really are in the end."
"Diversity is not just a goal, but a measurable basis for change," explains Prof. Kathrin Lemme, Head of Film at the Hamburg Media School. "The integration of OMNI into the programme offers our students the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the importance of diversity and to apply this knowledge to future projects. It is an important step that is not only theoretical but also practical." Helge Albers, CEO of MOIN Film Fund, adds: "The students of today are the filmmakers of tomorrow. It is therefore only logical that HMS, as a film university, is now working with OMNI Inclusion Data. Together, we are laying the foundation for sustainable development in the industry at an early stage."
The OMNI initiative is part of a broad collaboration with partners Netflix, Österreichisches Filminstitut, Hessen Film und Medien, nordmedia, MFG, Bavaria Film, UFA and ARD Degeto The platform offers an anonymised, uncomplicated way to collect and distribute diversity data from cast and crew. OMNI's first annual report will be available at the end of the year.
The film students are currently shooting at the HMS. OMNI has been accessible to the entire German film and media industry since the beginning of 2025.
