With NEST, MOIN Film Fund has been breaking new ground in development funding for over a year. Time to take stock: since the programme began in 2024, almost three million euros have been invested in the development of film ideas. That's more than twice as much as in the same period last year.
Introduced in January 2024, tested in March and launched regularly in June 2024: since last year, the MOIN Film Fund has invested €2.95 million in the development of new film material, including ideas from North German writers such as Detlev Buck, Kim Frank, Natja Brunckhorst and Kilian Riedhof. In NEST Space, the core programme of the new development funding, 47 ideas were supported with an average of more than 58,000 euros per project.
For comparison: In 2023, this sum was around €26,000 per project under the old funding structure.
Helge Albers, CEO of MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein: "NEST is a real game changer in our funding programme and I would like to thank our Supervisory Board, Dr Carsten Brosda and the great team at MOIN Film Fund for implementing it. Around 100 submissions per application round show very clearly that there is a need for new approaches to film development. We have created a programme that focuses on human, creative collaboration in the age of AI. With NEST, we encourage Script Writers to take as many creative risks as possible at an early stage and provide appropriate financial support for the development process. But one of the most exciting effects of NEST is only gradually becoming visible: the community of former NEST participants, which is involved in the selection of future projects and is perhaps the most powerful resource we can give the industry in terms of development support."
More about the NEST
NEST is aimed at established Script Writers and Executive Producers of feature films, series, animation projects, documentaries and XR projects as well as talented individuals. At the heart of the programme is the NEST Space: a five-day working week at the Baltic Sea in Schleswig-Holstein, where the selected Script Writers work collaboratively on their project ideas together with the Le Groupe Ouest initiative. The NEST tools are then available as financial support, with which the funding amount can reach up to 150,000 euros depending on the type of project. With funding in the NEST Space, Script Writers and Executive Producers automatically become part of the NEST community: a growing pool of creative people who remain in constant dialogue and are involved in the selection of future NEST projects. Segment Producer Paulina Toenne is now responsible for community management at MOIN.
As an alternative to NEST Space, NEST Classic funding can be applied for. The projects selected for this receive a one-off basic grant of 7,500 euros.
Since last year, 28 projects have received NEST Classic funding and 47 projects have been funded in NEST Space.
