Near the quays where the ferries dock, the "Landungsbrücken", stands the building housing the entrance to the old tunnel which runs underneath the river Elbe. It was opened in 1911. The classicist style of the brown sandstone square building, with its cupola and tall windows, is reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome. A much simpler version stands at the other end of the tunnel on island of Steinwerder where the docks are. Escalators, stairs and elevators (for vehicles) descend to two parallel-running tunnels which are 410 metres long. Hundreds of light bulbs on both sides are reflected in the tunnels" tiled walls decorated with maritime motifs.

Baurs Park's tree-lined lawns extend all the way down to the banks of the Elbe. A former garden of G.F. Baur, the park became public property in 1939. The French architect, Joseph Rammée, provided the drawings for the design of the park which was created between 1802 and 1815. The cast iron railings on the promenade with their stylized palm trees were created in 1834. There is a lighthouse on the near bank of the Kanonenberg.

The Cap San Diego is one of the last remaining ships of a series of six fast cargo ships built between 1961 and 1962 on shipyards in Hamburg and Kiel for the Hamburg-Südamerikanische Dampfschiffgesellschaft Eggert & Amsinck, the Hamburg-Southamerican Steamship Company. This type of ship represents the peak of conventional cargo shipbuilding. It belonged to the fast lines of its time with a big cold-storage hold and modern cabins for 12 passengers. Technical details: The ship with a 11,650 horsepower, two-stroke engine, is a good example of classical engine construction before the advent of electronic control engineering. The technical equipment is almost entirely preserved and in excellent working order. The interior design by the well-known Hamburg architect, Prof. C. Pinnau, is from the late 1950s and reflects the fashion of these days. The foredeck is extremely long, the middle part of the ship is a streamlined, closed construction. After many years abroad, the Cap San Diego returned to Hamburg in 1986.

The City Marina is one of Hamburg´s most versatile locations it features some of the most beautiful sights of the city. Because of the centred landing stages and anchorages, who have a direct optical connection to harbour facilities, Hanseatic Trade Center and city center, this spot is particularly favoured for shootings of all types.

The Deichtorhallen near the harbour and the main station, great halls each of 5,000 square metres, were built between 1911 and 1914 on the Deichtorplatz as a central market. One can admire the characteristic steel and brick construction used at the time. The three beautiful halls were carefully rebuilt and renovated and, since 1989, function as an exhibition centre for modern art. Various pieces of art, amongst them a sculpture by Richard Serra, are exhibited on the enormous square.

Three times a year, the traditional Hamburg funfair, the "Dom", takes place on the “Heiligengeistfeld”, a 29-hectare open space. The fair was named after the medieval Christmas market held at the St. Marien Dom, the St. Marien cathedral. A Ferris wheel, old merry-go-rounds and various stalls are spread out on a vast area. There are fireworks every Friday evening at the end of the day.

The impressive Hamburg town hall, is a manifestation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg´s traditions, was built at the end of the 19th century in the style of the Northern Renaissance. The facade and the luxurious interior were designed and built by many artists from all over Germany. The town hall is the official residence of the Senate and the State-City Council. The town hall also accommodates the Mayor´s offices, offices of the parliamentary groups and various other official rooms. Altogether the building has 647 rooms.

The “Handwerkskammer” (Chamber of Crafts) was built between 1912 and 1915 by the architect, Fritz Schumacher. The halls and the restaurant have been preserved. There are seven different halls and rooms, big enough to host between 30 and 400 people. Two magnificent staircases are part of the interior. The staircase in the Guildhall creates a wonderful effect with its light well. The brick facade with sculptures combines the gable of a dwelling and motifs of shipping companies´ offices.

The Jenisch house, built between the years 1831 and 1834, is a typical representative of late classicist architecture. Due to its almost square floor plan and its only graphically differentiated walls, the building appears sublimely plain. On the first floor, a balcony is supported by four Doric sandstone pillars. The filigree of the gold-plated cast iron balustrade decorates windows and balcony. After repairing the destructions of war, the house was re-opened in 1955 as museum of home decor. As the original furniture was not preserved, a compromise was created: The spacious representative rooms on the ground floor are decorated in Classical and Biedermeier-style, partly with artefacts from Jenisch's possession. The 14 rooms on the two other levels display furniture from the late Renaissance to Art Nouveau.

The "Kramer Amtsstuben" are located directly across from the Michel, the main church of Hamburg. Historical rooms with many details and restorations make you feel like a visitor of Hamburg 350 years ago. The narrow street leading from the Amtsstuben to the Michel is flanked by cultivated framework houses. On a small timber bridge, which combines two of the historical houses, is a very special Dinner place of a restaurant, from where you can enjoy the beautiful view over the alley up to the pinnacle of the Michel.

More than 120,000 working hours went into the construction of landscape and detailed gadgetry of this miniature world. Computers control the facility with its 500 trains, 50,000 lights and cars that run as if by magic. 60,000 figures on an area of 500sqm provide a lot of fun, and there is always something to explore. The facility is the largest digitally controlled miniature railway in the world.

Ottensen starts on the western side of the Altona train station. In former times, Ottensen was an old farmer and handcrafter town. At the middle of the last century it developed to an important industrial location of North Germany. The traffic-favorable position promoted the development of Ottensen to the industrial town part. Besides the country houses and villas next to the Elbe originated thus a typical factory quarter and working- class area. Today many former factory buildings are used as lofts and freehold flats, also as office surfaces. The district radiates a cosy and friendly atmosphere, and the proximity of the Elbe is captivating. Almost every corner has a restaurant to offer, on the streets there is hustle and bustle come rain or shine. Situatied in the heart of Ottensens, the Ottenser Hauptstraße is especially animated. In summer you can sit on one of the terraces of the cafes or restaurants. With the construction of the shopping-centre Mercado and the utilisation of the old ship's propeller factory Zeisehallen as cultural institution, the district changed from an industrial site into a multicultural, trendy quarter, without losing its charm. Ottensen offers multifaceted motives - renovated old buildings border on new ones and give the district historical meaning, courtyards exhibit artful balkonies and playgrounds, and the traffic is calmed down in several streets.

Highlife on the street at daytime until late at night: The Schulterblatt with its many cafés, bars, restaurants and small shops marks the centre of the young, trendy Schanzen quarter.

Due to the height and shape of its spire (132 metres) as well as its location, the St. Michaelis church is Hamburg"s most famous landmark. It was destroyed by lightning in 1750 and rebuilt on the same foundations between 1751 and 1762, adding new aisles. Designed by J.L. Prey and E.G. Sonnin, it became one of the most important Protestant churches. The copper top of the church tower was finished between 1777 and 1786. In 1906, St. Michaelis was victim of another fire and had to be reconstructed between 1907 and 1912. The late-baroque facade consists of red brickwork and sandstone. Copper was used for the roof and the spire. The rather simple former church entrance was replaced with a portal integrating art nouveau glass window. As is the tradition, there are three naves as well as aisles in this church. From the platform of the church tower one has a magnificent view of the new part of Hamburg, the harbour and its city centre.

The construction of the Landungsbrücken, the great piers for the passenger ships, was started in 1839. Like most of Hamburg´ s buildings for public transport, built around 1910, the piers were given an impressive facade. The massive square building seems rather archaic. Allegorical sculptures on either sides of the middle part of the building, restored between 1975 and 1976, depict the winds. The tower on the east side of the building has a water gauge for the Elbe. The pier, destroyed during the war, was rebuilt between 1953 and 1955. 688 metres in length, it is made of concrete and covered by a deck.

The citizens of Hamburg enjoy the summer and the sunshine on the sandy beach of the river Elbe at the old captains’ village, Övelgönne. Front gardens of all sizes stretch down to the riverbanks.
