
Oscar hopes for three films with North German participation

One step further in the Oscar race: Fatih Akin's Hamburg thriller "Into the Fate" has made it onto the shortlist in the "Best Foreign Film" category. The competition has thus shrunk to eight other productions. Among the contenders is the South African drama "The Wound". The special thing about it: The German co-producer is the Hamburg-based company Riva Film. The Hamburg Media School graduation film "Watu Wote" has already been shortlisted for a short film Oscar.

About the films: In Fatih Akin's thrillerInto the fate internationally renowned actress Diane Kruger plays Katja, a young mother who loses her husband and son in a bomb attack. The police catch two suspects: a young neo-Nazi couple. Katja wants justice - there is no alternative for her. Kruger received the award for Best Actress for her role at the 70th Cannes Film Festival. Into the Fate was produced by bombero international and Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany in co-production with Macassar Productions, Pathé and corazón international. The production was supported by Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein (FFHSH), Deutscher Filmförderfonds (DFFF), Die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (BKM), Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA).
Watu Wote tells a true story from Kenya: for decades, the country has been shaken by terrorist attacks by the Islamic organisation Al-Shabaab. Fear and mistrust grow between Christians and Muslims. Until December 2015, when the passengers of a coach manage to give an unprecedented testimony of humanity. The graduation film by Hamburg Media School graduates Katja Benrath (Director), Julia Drache (Script), Tobias Rosen (Creative Producer) and Felix Striegel (Cinematography) has already won numerous other prestigious awards, including the Golden Student Oscar, the Studio Hamburg Young Talent Award and two First Steps Awards.
The dramaThe wound by up-and-coming South African director John Trengove is about the ritual circumcision process that turns a boy into a man. The wealthy Kwanda is sent with a group to a village to undergo this tribal tradition. However, he discovers an intimate and forbidden relationship that puts his life in danger.The wound is an international collaboration between Uruca Media (Cape Town), Riva Filmproduktion (Hamburg) and other production companies.
About the Academy Awards: The 90th Academy Awards will take place in Hollywood on 4 March 2018. The Academy in Hollywood will decide on the final nominations in all categories. They will be announced on 23 January 2018.
