3 questions for...Moritz Boll
09.05.2018 | Short film "Abgetaucht"

Jury prize at Filmfest Schleswig-Holstein and audience award at the Kurzsuechtig film festival in Leipzig: Kiel filmmaker Moritz Boll is currently collecting one prize after another with his new short film "Abgetaucht". The film is about a father who pretends to take his daughter on holiday, but actually kidnaps the girl. Time for a little interview.
- How did you come up with the story of Abgetaucht?
An actor friend of mine, Felix Zimmer, once told me about a so-called "map mystery". In 2012, it was discovered that the island "Sandy Island" does not exist. Until then, it could even be found on Google Maps. We then thought about why someone would think up an island. Not a big conspiracy theory, but on a small scale. Why would a father think up an island? In my personal environment, I heard about a pretty dramatic family problem that was the catalyst for combining the two.
- Has there ever been a situation in your life in which you yourself simply disappeared?
In order not to spoil anything, I'll answer quite harmlessly: Yes! In Croatia, while snorkelling.

- Which film scene was the trickiest for you?
We also wanted to reinforce the unpredictability of the situation in the forest with the weather in the film. We wanted a real thunderstorm with a sudden downpour. Felix and Fabius carried out highly scientific studies on the ability of garden sprinklers from the DIY store to imitate rain. After about two hours on location, the ground was so muddy that the pick-up sank in. In this scene, however, father and daughter are supposed to be very close, it's all about the two of them. It's difficult to keep calm when you're getting soaked by a garden sprinkler the whole time. But I think that makes it the strongest scene.
