At its most recent funding meeting, the Director's Cut Committee of Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein awarded around 900,000 euros to 23 projects, including the drama "Maret" with "Styx" star Susanne Wolff and a documentary about the Syrian ex-professional swimmer Sarah Mardini with Oscar-winning Director of Photography Zamarin Wahdat.
Directors Laura Schroeder sends leading actress Susanne Wolff ("Styx") to the theatre in her new dramaMaret (250,000 euros, Red Balloon Film, Hamburg) to a clinic in Lanzarote. A pioneering brain operation seems to be the only hope of restoring her memory. But does she really want to remember the person she once was? Schroeder wrote the script together with Judith Angerbauer. Nine days of filming are planned in the funding region.
The eventful life of Syrian ex-professional swimmer Sarah Mardini, a refugee, is the subject of I am Sarah (100,000 euros, DOCDAYS Productions, Berlin) by filmmaker Charly Wai Feldman. Because Sarah helped refugees on Lesbos, she is now facing up to 25 years in prison. A documentary about a young woman's fight for solidarity for refugees and her own freedom. Oscar-winner Zamarin Wahdat from Hamburg is in charge of the camera. Two days of filming are planned in the Hanseatic city and Schleswig-Holstein.
Directors and photo artist Pepa Hristova from Hamburg travelled to the Bulgarian-Turkish border. In her documentaryStrandzha (80,000 euros, fünferfilm, Hamburg) shows the border region of the same name with its beautiful landscapes and inhabitants and tells European history from an undiscovered corner of the continent. Further production funding is available for the DocumentaryThe Mission (55,000 euros, dirk manthey film, Hamburg) by Finnish Director and Script Writer Tania Moilanen. It follows four American Mormon teenagers on their mission to convert the Finnish population to their faith. The life of young influencers is the subject of#MeMyself&I (50,000 euros, Corso Film- und Fernsehproduktion, Cologne) by Carolin Genreith from Hamburg. A vivid portrait of traditional family values and child marriage in Turkey comes withWhitewash (45,000 euros, Jyoti Film, Hamburg) by Ahmet Necdet Cupur. John Gürtler ("Systemsprenger") is responsible for the soundtrack. The DocumentaryThe private sphere remains political (44,000 euros) by filmmaker Claudia Richarz from Eckernförde is about the controversial, feminist filmmaker Helke Sander. Carolin Schmitz's docu-drama revolves around the topic of motherhoodMother (40,000 euros, Sutor Kolonko e.K., Cologne), Directors Volker Koepp takes a look at the Leaving and Staying (11,000 euros) to people in the Baltic Sea regions of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein. In total, nine projects will receive production funding totalling 675,000 euros, of which 619,000 euros will go to seven projects directed by women.
The Director's Cut Committee has approved a project development for the dramaBlind Entertainment (13,000 euros, Riva Filmproduktion, Hamburg) was awarded to Directors and Script Writer Naëmi Büchtemann.
Screenplay funding is available for a total of six projects: 50,000 euros will go to the series Black fruits (Jünglinge Film, Hildesheim) by Script Writers Christoph Rath, Lamin Leroy Gibba, Lisa Tracy Michalik, Naomi Kelechi Odhiambo, Sarah Claire Wray and Sophia Ayissi Nsegue. At the centre of the story of the "Futur Drei" film collective are two women in their mid-twenties who used to be best friends but now have little in common - except, of course, that they are both black, queer and equally confused. In the thrillerCold heart (30,000 euros, Junafilm, Hamburg), the "Schlaf" team Michael Venus (Directors) and Thomas Friedrich (script together with Carly May Borgstrom) investigate a dark secret of former best friends. Further screenplay funding is available for the mystery dramaAdams Clay (25,000 euros, Detailfilm, Hamburg) by Hille Norden from Schleswig-Holstein, the drama ERBE (20,000 euros) by David Aufdembrinke from Hamburg, the fictional feature film debutSalt mine (19,800 euros) by Karimah Ashadu from Hamburg and the genre mix Gemini (19,500 euros) by HFBK graduate Jasmin Luu.
In the Distribution segment, the two projectsBorn for Korn (10,000 euros, barnsteiner-film, Ascheffel) andMo&Friese out and about in nature (10,000 euros, KurzFilmAgentur, Hamburg). FiveCinemas also receive playback funding totalling 22,100 euros.
The Director's Cut Committee is responsible for films and series with production costs of less than 3.5 million euros and cinema documentaries with production costs of less than 1.5 million euros.
The funding decision was made on 23 September: Bettina Brokemper, Gabor Greiner, Timo Großpietsch, Mia Spengler and Helge Albers.
