
220,000 euros for 17 Hamburg cinemas and initiatives

As part of a major social media campaign, the 2021 Hamburg Cinema Awards were presented by Senator for Culture Dr Carsten Brosda on 19 August. The Senator for Culture was supported by 17 prominent laudators, including Detlev Buck, Peter Lohmeyer and Catrin Striebeck. The cinema prizes were more than doubled to 220,000 euros this year as part of the coronavirus aid programme.
With a major social media campaign, the Hamburg Cinema Awards were presented online and publicly for the first time this year. 17 Hamburg arthouse and neighbourhood cinemas as well as initiatives were delighted to see their prize money doubled to a total of 220,000 euros. The doubling of the prize money by the Ministry of Culture and Media is intended to provide Hamburg's cinemas with additional support to secure their existence in times of the pandemic. In order to create even more visibility for the award-winning cinemas after they reopened in July, a total of 17 prominent laudators came together for a major social media campaign this year, which provided digital support to Culture Senator Dr Carsten Brosda and MOIN Film Fund CEO Helge Albers during the award ceremony. Among the celebrities from film, culture and media were Detlev Buck, Catrin Striebeck, Peter Lohmeyer, Pheline Roggan and Gustav Peter Wöhler. About the cinema prize jury: Film producer and Director Lars Jessen ("Wildes Herz", "Fraktus", "Dorfpunks"), cinema operator Verena von Stackelberg (Wolf Kino, Berlin) and Hamburg film journalist Britta Schmeis decided on this year's Hamburg Cinema Awards. The three industry experts form the current cinema award jury.
About the Hamburg cinema awards: The Hamburg Cinema Awards have been presented to Hamburg cinemas and screening venues since 1993 for outstanding film programmes or other measures that promote cinema culture. They are initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein.
