Hamburg film on Oscar shortlist
18.12.2024 | "The seed of the sacred fig"
The next step on the Oscar podium has been taken: Directors and Hamburg resident Mohammad Rasoulof is on the shortlist for the foreign Oscar with his drama "The Seeds of the Sacred Fig". The Cannes film, produced in Hamburg, is in the running for Germany and now has to prevail against 14 other international films.
Helge Albers, CEO of MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein: "Hamburg is getting a whiff of Oscar air! Just a few days ago there was a Golden Globe nomination for 'The Seeds of the Sacred Fig'. The fact that the path for the Oscar nomination has now also been paved is of course all the more pleasing for Mohammad Rasoulof from Hamburg! It's simply amazing what a festival journey the film has already been on in recent months with Cannes, Toronto, Locarno and Filmfest Hamburg. Now we're keeping our fingers crossed for the grand finale. And if you haven't seen the film yet: It will be in cinemas from 26 December. Don't miss it!"
A film from Hamburg was already in the spotlight at the Academy Awards at the beginning of the year: İlker Çatak's drama "The Teachers' Lounge", shot between the Elbe and Alster rivers, was nominated in the "Best International Film" category.
About the film "The Seed of the Sacred Fig"
Rasoulof's political family drama "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" was produced by Hamburg-based production company Run Way Pictures and financially supported by the MOIN Film Fund. Also involved from the Hanseatic city: editor Andrew Bird ("Soul Kitchen", "Tschick", "Into the Fate") as well as Optical Art and Loft Studios for post production. The film is about Iman, who has just been promoted to investigating judge at the Revolutionary Court in Tehran when a huge protest movement sweeps the country following the death of a young woman. Although the demonstrations increase and the state takes ever tougher measures, Iman decides to side with the regime, upsetting the balance of his family.
At the 77th Cannes International Film Festival, Mohammad Rasoulof won the Special Jury Prize, among other honours. In addition to its German premiere at the Filmfest Hamburg, the film has already been shown this year in Locarno on the Piazza Grande and at the Toronto International Film Festival.
