European film organisations join forces to form anti-racism task force
01.07.2021 | ARTEF
In the summer of 2020, a group of European filmmakers came together to found ARTEF, the Anti-Racism Taskforce for European Film. The first step was an awareness-raising programme led by Dr Emilia Roig, trainer, Script Writer and founder of the Centre for Intersectional Justice in Berlin. The workshops took place online between November 2020 and May 2021 with an average of 40 participants per session from all over Europe.
The main goal of ARTEF is to dismantle racist structures and combat all forms of racism in the European film industry with a broad and intersectional approach. ARTEF aims to become a task force for change: by raising awareness, through education and information, with proposals to revise regulations and practices as well as against resistance from the industry - especially those who usually benefit from institutionalised racism.
After the first year, ARTEF will continue to organise training programmes for European filmmakers who want to fight institutionalised racism, work to dismantle existing structures and help build new, inclusive structures in the coming decades. Anyone who is or has been affected by racism in the European film industry is invited to join ARTEF and help build a meaningful task force.
So far, ARTEF has laid the foundations for future action. Now the Task Force is reaching out to all European film institutions, including festivals, film commissions and filmmakers' associations, to ask them to join ARTEF, participate in training, pool resources and turn awareness into action.
ARTEF invites filmmakers in all European countries to write to their institutions, collectives, trade unions and organisations to ask them to join ARTEF's work and contribute ideas, suggestions or requests.
