With the Bandits through Hamburg
23.03.2023 | 1 City sees 1 Film
It's that time again: on 16 April, 17 Hamburg arthouse cinemas will be showing a Hanseatic city classic in their programme. This year you can look forward to "Bandits" by Katja von Garnier from 1997 at "Eine Stadt sieht einen Film". A large part of the film team will be present at the cinema screenings.
Since 2016, there has been a very special cinema event in the Hanseatic city: for an entire Sunday, Hamburg's arthouse cinemas show a classic from the last few decades that was filmed on the Elbe in a joint event. After films such as "Short Sharp Shock" by Fatih Akin or "Absolute Giganten" by Sebastian Schipper, this year everything revolves around the classic "Bandits" by Director Katja von Garnier.
When the Bandits flickered across German cinema screens in 1997, the single "Catch me" was playing up and down on many radio stations - the accompanying album sold more than 700,000 copies. Most of the music film about a prison band on the run was shot in Hamburg - one of the most important scenes was filmed on Elbstraße, not far from Hamburg's fish market. This is where the band led by Jasmin Tabatabai and Katja Riemann play their last concert on the roof of a dilapidated building, which actually fell victim to the wrecking ball shortly after filming ended. Today, there are two modern office buildings right on the waterfront. Of course, the view of the harbour has hardly changed since then.
Anyone who would like to go on a location scouting trip on 16 April will have the opportunity to do so with "Bandits" Director of Photography Torsten Breuer. But beware: places are very limited - first come, first serve.
